Cara Cecilia,
ti scrivo questo biglietto, anche se non puoi ancora leggerlo, per dirti che non ti sto regalando un libro o una libreria a forma di casa delle bambole: ti sto regalando delle storie, un viaggio verso tutti i luoghi che vuoi vedere e le avventure che vuoi provare.
Ti sto regalando un giardino segreto da mostrare solo a chi vuoi, un moschettiere che ti difenda da chi ti farà i dispetti, un gatto simpatico e dispettoso che si proverà i tuoi stivali, un’isola piena di pirati che cantano con voce cavernosa e delle piccole donne che, come te, crescono.
Ti sto regalando una porta verso tanti mondi diversi, come in Narnia (anche se quello era un armadio), come nei Fluppys. E ti regalo un segreto: un libro fa anche passare il mal di pancia!
Rimane lì ad aspettarti dopo che hai finito di giocare con gli amici, e se qualche volta ci litighi, con gli amici, un libro ti dirà “non ti preoccupare, anch’io mi sento come te”.
E non ti preoccupare neanche se ti dicono di non rovinarli, i libri: non è vero (i tuoi però, non quelli degli altri). I libri vanno sottolineati, spostati, anche strappati se una parte proprio non ti piace – però poi dovrai chiedere scusa, e sappi che non vale con i libri di scuola. Puoi prenderli e lasciarli e riprenderli più tardi, quando ne avrai voglia, e piegare gli angoli. Puoi saltare qualche pagina e rileggere la tua preferita anche dieci, cento volte! Puoi, infine, leggere dappertutto: in treno, in bagno, in biblioteca o mentre aspetti il tuo turno dal dottore, perché i tuoi libri preferiti, come i tuoi amici preferiti, ti seguono dappertutto, anche quando non li vedi.
E se ti diranno che leggere è importante, o che è noioso, o che bisogna leggere, ti dico un altro segreto: la verità è che leggere è bello! Se non mi credi, prova a prendere in mano Harry Potter, lui di magia se ne intende.

Dear Cecilia,
I’m writing this note, even if you cannot read it, to tell you that I’m not giving you a book, or a dollhouse shaped bookcase: I’m giving you tales, a trip to all the places you want to see and adventures you want to try.
I’m giving you a secret garden for you to show only to those you want to, a musketeer who will defend you from bullies, a funny and mischievous cat that will try your boots on, an island full of pirates who sing in a cavernous voice and little women who, like you, are growing up.
I’m giving you a door to so many different worlds, as in Narnia (although that was a closet), as in The Fluppy Dogs. And I’ll give you a secret: a book also send away a stomachache!
It remains there, waiting for you to finish playing with your friends, and if sometimes you quarrel with them, a book will tell you “don’t worry, I feel like you.”
And don’t worry even if they tell you not to ruin them: it’s not true (yours, though, not those of others. Books should be highlighted, moved, you can even torn a page you just don’t like – but then you will need to say sorry, and know that it is not the case with school books. You can take them and leave them and resume them later, when you’ll feel like it, and fold the corners. You can skip a few pages and read your favorite even ten, or a hundred times! You can finally read everywhere: on the train, in the bathroom, in the library or while you wait your turn to the doctor, because your favorite books, such as your favorite friends, follow you everywhere, even when you don’t see them.
And if they tell you that reading is important, or that it is boring, or that you have to read, I’ll tell you another secret: the truth is that reading is beautiful! If you don’t believe me, try asking Harry Potter, he knows about magic.

Essere la madrina di Cecilia è stata una sorpresa che mi ha riempita di gioia, perché la sua è una bellissima famiglia che ha la felicità come traguardo quotidiano.
Being Cecilia’s Godmother has been a surprise that has filled me with joy, because hers is a wonderful family that has happiness as daily goal.
Il suo battesimo è stato il più simpatico ed originale a cui io abbia assistito, con i festeggiamenti in una baita sul Monte Grappa e l’intimità che viene dagli spazi stretti in mezzo ad orizzonti ampi, e il calore della vicinanza e del buon vino.
Her Christening was the most likeable and original that I have witnessed, with the party being held in a lodge on Mountain Grappa and the intimacy that comes from tight spaces amid wide horizons, and the warmth that comes from the proximity and good wine.
Naturalmente non ho saputo resistere e, quando mamma Laura mi ha chiesto di regalarle un libro, è diventato una libreria tutta da riempire, personalizzata da ghirlande e fiori creati a mano perché il tempo è sempre il regalo più grande che possiamo fare, soprattutto ai bambini. Per non smentirci, comunque, anche le sue bomboniere sono state un’esplosione di primavera per tutti!
Of course I could not resist, and when mom Laura asked me to give her a book, it became a library all to be filled, personalized with handmade garlands and flowers, because time is always the greatest gift we can give, especially to children. Obviously, her favors were also a Spring explosion for everyone!
