Cherish the moment – Godi del momento

When I bought the Forsyte Saga, some years ago in a sultry afternoon, I had never heard about it: it was laying all alone in a dusty, creepy bookshop near my University, but somehow managed to told me it was the book I wanted to read that day (well, days). This obscure Nobel Prize-winning story of a large commercial upper class English family caught me with its futile resistance and inability of understand time passing by, and with its dramatic link between a new spring and the death of what was before. Because spring is death too, for the winter, and we often forget it, we often take for granted our winters and our less-spectacular days, blinded by the most vivid colors.
Working from home is not the heaven that many imagine, but it allows me to do one thing: cherish the moment. Yes I do sometimes work for days and days past midnight, still I can sometimes have a quiet moment all by myself while a tv somewhere else is talking, some boys are screaming and playing down the street, my cat is purring at my cup of tea and Tom Waits is singing in the background, to think that Spring is here and time goes so fast that I am glad I am able to value some moments, some people, even when they are no longer a novelty.

Quando ho comprato La Saga dei Forsyte, alcuni anni fa in un pomeriggio afoso, non ne avevo mai sentito parlare: se ne stava lì, tutto solo in una inquietante libreria polverosa vicino alla mia università, ma in qualche modo è riuscito a comunicarmi di essere il libro che volevo leggere quel giorno (o meglio, giorni). Questa misconosciuta storia (vincitrice del premio Nobel) di una grande famiglia della upper class commerciale inglese mi ha catturata con la sua futile resistenza e l’incapacità di comprendere il tempo che passa, e con il suo legame drammatico tra una nuova primavera e la morte di ciò che era prima. Perché la primavera è anche morte, per l’inverno, e spesso dimentichiamo, spesso diamo per scontato i nostri inverni e le nostre giornate meno spettacolari, accecati dai colori.
Lavorare da casa non è quel paradiso che molti immaginano, ma mi permette di fare una cosa: godere del momento. Sì, a volte lavoro per giorni fino a dopo mezzanotte, ma altre riesco ad avere un momento di tranquillità solo per me, mentre un televisore da qualche parte chiacchiera, alcuni ragazzini gridano giocando per la strada, il mio gatto fa le fusa alla mia tazza di tè e Tom Waits canta in sottofondo, a pensare che la primavera è qui e il tempo passa così velocemente che sono contenta di essere in grado di dare il giusto valore ad alcuni momenti, alcune persone, anche quando non sono più una novità.

Tonight Franklin is back home from Milan, and singing at a St. Patrick’s Day party. I have created a felt shamrock pin for him, and the hearts clip for my hair. After drawing the templates I cut them on felt and then just tried different combinations until I was satisfied with the result. The needlework gives a refined flavor to everything, and it’s getting easier the more I try it, so I’m never going to abandon it!

Questa sera Franklin torna da Milano e canta ad una festa di San Patrizio. Ho preparato una spilla a quadrifoglio per lui, e la clip a cuori per i miei capelli. Dopo aver disegnato i templates li ho tagliati su feltro e poi provato diverse combinazioni fino a sentirmi soddisfatta del risultato. Il bordo con ago e filo dà al tutto un senso di rifinito, e diventa sempre più facile man mano che mi esercito, perciò non lo abbandonerò mai più!

Felt mug cozy in a snow country – Morbidi copritazze nel paese delle nevi

In a day like this, when you return home you need a good tea in your hands with a mug cozy to avoid burning yourself, cats and good reads.

In una giornata così, quando si torna a casa ci vuole un buon tè caldo da tenere fra le mani con un copritazza comodo per non scottarsi, gatti e buone letture.

Pick your mug and create a paper template, something like this. Cut then the template on the felt, or wool, or fabric you want to use. Remember: if the fabric is thin, you wull need to double the layers. Add now all the decorations, I made sunflowers for mine and suspenders and bowtie for Franklin. You can open and close it whith velcro or a button.

Prendete la vostra tazza e create un template di carta, qualcosa del genere. Tagliate poi il template sul feltro, o la lana, o la stoffa che intendete usare. Ricordate che se il tessuto è sottile avrete bisogno di raddoppiare gli strati. Aggiungete ora le decorazioni, io ho fatto dei girasoli per il mio e farfallino e bretelle per Franklin. Per aprirlo e chiuderlo potete usare del velcro o un bottone.
